2026 WCQ: Adepoju reveals why Super Eagles drew with Zimbabwe

Published on March 28, 2025 at 04:59 PM

Former Real Madrid midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju, has revealed the reason for Nigeria's 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Recall that the Super Eagles drew with Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday.

Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead in the 74 minute after several missed chances by Eric Chelle's men in the first-half.

Zimbabwe equalized in stoppage time through substitute Tawanda Chirewa.

The result leaves Nigeria in fourth position with six points behind leaders South Africa.

Speaking to Flashscore, Adepoju insisted that poor game management cost Chelle's side against Zimbabwe.

“Before the game against Zimbabwe, I said Nigeria might qualify for the World Cup, but it would be tough. Now, it is even tougher,” he said.

“We were on the right track after our win in Rwanda, but our result against Zimbabwe set us back.

“If we had won, we would have had nine points, but now we have only five.

“The boys didn’t play badly, but poor game management at the end cost us the result.”
