2026 WCQ: Lesotho coach reacts to South Africa’s potential points deduction

Published on March 27, 2025 at 01:02 AM

Lesotho coach, Leslie Notsi, has reacted to news that South Africa could be punished for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in one of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches in Nigeria's Group C.

Lesotho could benefit from the confirmation that Group C leaders South Africa fielded Mokoena during their 2-0 victory over Lesotho last week.

Mokoena should not have played against Lesotho, having received two yellow cards in previous matches.

Secretary-general of the Lesotho Football Association, Mokhosi Mohapi, confirmed that a formal inquiry regarding Mokoena has been sent to FIFA regarding the issue.

However, South Africa could lose three points, and Lesotho could be awarded three goals and three points, if FIFA rules on the matter.

When asked to comment on the development, Notsi maintained a diplomatic stance.

“On this matter, I can't say much; my focus was on today's match [against Rwanda],” Notsi was quoted as saying by Soccer Laduma.

“I think that one is up to the authorities and those in charge, and I heard they will file complaints, but I don't know anything, I do not know if they have done it yet.”
