2026 WCQ: Osimhen in tears as Super Eagles blow lead against Zimbabwe

Published on March 25, 2025 at 08:53 PM

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen was in tears at full-time as the team played out a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday evening.

Osimhen had given Nigeria the lead towards the end of the game, heading home Ola Aina's pinpoint cross.

However, the Napoli striker had to be substituted minutes later after collapsing onto the turf with cramps.

From the bench, Osimhen watched helplessly as Tawanda Chirewa ran through to slot home the equaliser past Stanley Nwabali in the 90th minute.

At full-time, Osimhen, who scored twice in the 2-0 win over Rwanda, cut an emotional figure as the reality of the result sank in.

The Eagles remain in fourth place with seven points, four behind Group C leaders South Africa, who defeated Benin Republic 2-0 in Abidjan.

Eric Chelle now faces a major battle to even reach the qualifying play-offs.
