2026 WCQ: Super Eagles’ hopes of qualification hinges on Benin vs South Africa clash

Published on March 25, 2025 at 05:22 AM

The complexion of Group C in the CAF section of the 2026 World Cup qualifying series could change drastically by Tuesday night.

Ahead of Match Day 6, South Africa sit top with 10 points, two more than second-placed Benin Republic.

Rwanda have seven points, while Nigeria have six points.

South Africa look prime to take the ticket from the group. And their next fixture will be away to Benin Republic.

If Bafana Bafana win this top-of-the-table clash, then they are all but guaranteed to be at the World Cup next year.

However, Gernot Rohr's can throw a spanner in the works if they take points off Hugo Broos' men. If they win, the Beninoise will become the new leaders in the group.

Kicking off at the same time will be Nigeria vs Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

The Super Eagles missed out at the last edition in Qatar in 2022 and are looking to make amends this time around.

A 2-0 victory in Rwanda last Friday, saw the Eagles revive their chances and Tuesday's home fixture against The Warriors feels like another win in the bag – although Eric Chelle's men have to be professional about it.

But if they indeed beat Zimbabwe, Nigeria will be up to nine points with four games left.

If Rohr's men do them a favour by taking points off South Africa, then the Eagles will be right back in the race with a better chance of qualification.

Keep an eye on Rwanda vs Lesotho as Amavubi could also get up to 10 points with a win. However, the game to watch is Benin vs South Africa.
