2026 WCQ: We can’t afford to drop points – Troost-Ekong warns ahead of Zimbabwe clash

Published on March 24, 2025 at 02:46 PM

Captain of the Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, has warned his teammates against complacency ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Uyo on Tuesday evening.

Nigeria revived their hopes of being at the 2026 World Cup to be hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada by beating Rwanda 2-0 on Friday.

The Super Eagles will now face Zimbabwe in their second game of this month's FIFA international break as they hope to keep all hopes alive.

The victory marked Nigeria’s first win in the World Cup qualification campaign, elevating their tally to six points from five games.

However, they remain fourth on the log with five more games left to play.

In a statement by the NFF, Troost-Ekong emphasized the significance of the match, warning his teammates against underestimating the Warriors.

“We are looking forward to a win. The three points are important to us. At this stage, we cannot afford to drop any more points,” Troost-Ekong stated.

“Our aim is to take it one match at a time, collect three points here and there and hope fervently that these will be enough to get us the ticket.”

DAILY POST reports that a win against Zimbabwe would be a significant boost for Nigeria.
