2026 WCQ: We made mistakes – Chelle on why Super Eagles drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe

Published on March 25, 2025 at 08:09 PM

The head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has admitted that the team “made some mistakes” during their 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Nigeria squandered a one-goal lead, dropping two points at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Victor Osimhen’s header was cancelled out by a 90th-minute goal from Tawanda Chirewa.

Speaking after the match, Chelle said: “We made some mistakes, but we were the better team on the pitch. This is football. It is difficult for me to analyse the game right now; we will review it later. We scored and tried to score another goal.”

When asked specifically about the goal his team conceded, Chelle refused to blame any of his players.

“I don't want to blame the defenders,” he added.
