5 good movies on Netflix this weekend: May 1, 2021

Published on May 01, 2021 at 04:23 PM

Looking for something new to watch with the family this weekend? What about a thriller? Here are the five must-watch movies on Netflix from May 1–2, 2021.

There are some excellent movies arriving on May 1. If you haven't introduced the kids to the movies yet, all three Back to the Future movies are on Netflix once again. They're not making this list for the weekend purely because they always belong on the list.

There are so many other movies on Netflix worth checking out that would be overlooked because of the tales of Marty McFly and Doc Brown. And there are some great picks for the entire family, including the epic Land Before Time movies.

With some big drops from the end of April and the start of a new month, we're breaking down the top five picks.

Best movies on Netflix

August: Osage County

We start with the tragicomedy from 2013 starring Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, and Juliette Lewis. The movie was written by Tracy Letts, based on his play of the same name, and follows the Weston family. Members of the family come back together in the face of tragic news.

Families are messy. They come with complications and baggage. That's something this movie certainly focuses on.

Things Heard and Seen

Amanda Seyfried and James Norton star in this thriller that came to Netflix during the week. They play Catherine and George, a couple that moves into a new home. It's supposed to be their fresh start, but things start to turn horrifying for Catherine.

Not only does the house have some dark secrets, but so does her husband. Will she figure them out before it's too late on Things Heard and Seen?

The Mitchells vs. The Machines

Looking for something for the children? The Mitchells vs. The Machines is a fun movie that is sure to have everyone laughing. The Mitchells head out on a road trip before the daughter starts college, only to end up dealing with machines that come to life.

The family will need to work with two friendly robots to take on the machines. They're not just protecting themselves, but they're protecting the world from machines looking to take over.

Stargate

There are some great sci-fi movies that kickstart TV franchises. One of the best has to be Stargate, which is one of the movies on Netflix that dropped today.

The movie focuses on the finding of a gate that unlocks paths to other planets. The military calls on archeologist and linguist Dr. Daniel Jackson to help unlock the code. From there, they need to survive a new planet that is very much like Ancient Egypt. Can they help the people of the planet realize their leader isn't the man he says he is.

Zombieland

Sometimes you just need an action-comedy. That's where the final pick comes into play. Zombieland is the first of two movies that centers on a group of people coming together in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

They need to figure out how to survive, but can they trust each other enough to work together? It's perfect for when you just want to relax and unwind.
