Abia, Sokoto, make history as National Handball Championship ends in Umuahia

Abia State has won the first position in both Male and Female categories of the National Under-15 Handball Championship in Nigeria, becoming the Junior National Champions for the first time in history

Also, Team Sokoto with Special performances, won the Male category of the Under-12 National Handball trophy, while the Female team of Benue State lifted the Female Under-12 Category, with prizes.

The National sporting event, which was organized by Abia State government, in collaboration with the Handball Federation of Nigeria, between March 18 and March 28, had 20 States in Nigeria.

Speaking to journalists, Abia State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Nwaobilor Ananaba represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Cyril Nwaigwe said the National sporting event has fostered peace, love and unity amongst Nigerians and was used to discover future champions for Abia State and Nigeria.

In his speech, the Abia State Director of Sports, Obioma George said the championship which was sponsored by Abia State government, was used by Governor Alex Otti to revive Handball in Abia.

In her evaluation of the tournament, the Secretary General of Handball Federation of Nigeria, Monica O. said that the development of Handball in Nigeria received a further boost with the discovery of new talents, while officials of Sokoto and Benue State praised the Abia State government for the security and quality of the tournament.
