Abia to review obsolete provisions in criminal justice law, others

Abia State government has inaugurated two committees to review administration of criminal justice law 2017 and criminal code law 2005, as well as the simplification of the child rights law 2006.

The committees are to review ambiguities, inconsistencies, obsolete provisions and other areas requiring modernization in the existing legal frameworks.

Inaugurating the two committees in his office in Umuahia, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Abia State, Uwanna Ikechukwu, said that the review was to improve the effectiveness of the criminal Justice Administration in the State and address the identified deficiencies.

He explained that the child rights law that came into effect needed to be simplified in such a way that even old women can read and understand the law.

Ikechuckwu explained said that members of the committees comprised of Judges, Chief Magistrates, legal gurus drawn from the Judiciary, Ministry of Justice, the civil society and others.

He charged the two committees to do their jobs diligently, assuring them that they would get every support to do hindrance-free work.

Justice Agwu Umah Kalu K. was inaugurated as the Chairman, Joint review committee on the administration of criminal justice law, 2017 and the criminal code law 2005, while Paul Ogubunka was inaugurated as the Chairman of the committee on the simplification of the child rights law, 2006.
