I thought my anxiety symptoms were linked to me losing my dad – then Chat GPT diagnosed me with blood cancer

Published on March 26, 2025 at 08:43 PM

A WOMAN has told how Chat GPT correctly diagnosed her with blood cancer after she initially thought her symptoms were caused by anxiety.

Marly Garnreiter, 27, was sure her night sweats and itchy skin were caused by anxiety and grief at losing her dad Victor, 58, to bowel cancer.

When she also started losing weight, she put her symptoms into Chat GPT which said she likely had blood cancer.

“Sceptical” Marly ignored it.

But after feeling tired all the time and getting a pressure in her chest she went to see her GP who ran a scan and saw a mass on her left lung.

She was referred to a pulmonologist who did a biopsy which diagnosed Marly with Hodgkin's lymphoma – a type of blood cancer.

Now Marly has started chemotherapy – which she will receive four to six rounds of – and is taking it all “step by step”.

Marly, a strategist, from Paris, France, said: “I started to lose a lot of weight when he'd just passed away.

“I kept eating normal amounts of food but I thought it must be the anxiety making me lost a lot of weight.

“I'd accepted you lose weight with grief.

“I was having night sweats and itchy skin.

“Again I thought it was anxiety.”

Marly lost her dad in January 2024 – after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2022.

Her symptoms shortly after and she saw a doctor for some blood tests but they all came back fine.

Her doctor agreed that it was the grief giving her these symptoms.

But as time passed Marly began to question if there was something more to it.

She said: “I felt I was processing the grief well.

“I thought it must be something.

We were all sceptical and told to only consult real doctors

“In May I sent a took a video to my friends – I had asked Chat GPT and it said I had blood cancer.

“I ignored it. We were all sceptical and told to only consult real doctors.”

But in January 2025 Marly went back to see her doctor.

She said: “Around Christmas time I started to feel something was wrong.

“I had a constant pain in my chest. I was tired all the time.”

Her GP discovered a “big mass” on her left lung and referred her to a pulmonologist.

‘I didn't want my family to go through this one more time'

They took a biopsy and Marly was diagnosed with cancer on February 10, 2025.

She said: “I felt a lot of anger.

“I felt like everything was unfair.

“I didn't want my family to go through this one more time.”

Marly had a chance to do an egg retrieval so she could freeze her eggs before starting chemotherapy on March 1.

She will have four to six cycles.

She's now feeling confident for the future, but is urging others to listen to their bodies

Marly said: “I'm feeling confident for the future.

“It's really important to listen to our bodies.

“Sometimes we tend to lose our connection with our inner self.

“It's important to be in tune.”

While AI offers potential benefits in healthcare, you should not solely rely on AI for a health diagnosis.

AI systems are not yet as reliable as human medical professionals and may lack the necessary context and nuance for accurate diagnosis.

What is Hodgkin lymphoma?

HODGKIN lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes.

It is not common, with around 2,100 people diagnosed every year in the UK.

Hodgkin lymphoma can develop at any age, but it mostly affects people between 20 and 40 years of age and those over 75. Slightly more men than women are affected.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, on the other hand, is diagnosed in 13,000 new patients per year. It is more common as you get older, with over a third of cases diagnosed in people over the age of 75.

In Hodgkin lymphoma, B-lymphocytes (a particular type of lymphocyte) start to multiply in an abnormal way and begin to collect in certain parts of the lymphatic system, such as the lymph nodes (glands).

The affected lymphocytes lose their infection-fighting properties, making a person more vulnerable to infection.

Like all cancers, symptoms vary and can be vague. However, patients usually notice swelling in one or more lymph nodes.

This can be in any area of the body, but is often in the neck, armpit or groin.

The swelling is usually painless, although some people find that it aches.

Some people with Hodgkin lymphoma also have other more general symptoms. These can include:

  • Night sweats
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • A high temperature (fever)
  • A persistentcoughor feeling ofbreathlessness
  • Persistent itching of the skin all over the body
