Army faults police version of rescue operation in Taraba, gives fresh story

Published on April 06, 2025 at 06:38 AM

The Nigerian Army has refuted claims made by the Taraba State Police Command regarding the circumstances surrounding the abduction and rescue of an Israeli national, Mr. Gil Itamar, who was kidnapped on April 3, 2025, in Atim Community along the Takum–Chanchangi Road.

In a statement released by Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 6 Brigade, the Army rejected the police’s assertion that Mr. Itamar was abducted while under military escort. According to the Army, the Israeli national was alone in his vehicle at the time of the incident.

The Army also contradicted the police claim of a gun battle during the rescue. Captain Oni clarified that the victim’s release was achieved without firing a single shot, and was the result of intelligence-led efforts involving local village heads and youth leaders in Kofai Ahmadu, Apako, and Chanchangi.

“While we commend inter-agency cooperation, we urge the Taraba Police Command to ensure accuracy in its public statements to avoid misleading the public and undermining security efforts,”; the Army stated.

The Police, however, had earlier issued a press release through its spokesperson, James Lashen, stating that Itamar was kidnapped while under military escort and was rescued after a fierce gunfight involving police, military, and local hunters.

The conflicting narratives have drawn attention to apparent coordination issues between security agencies, despite the successful outcome of the rescue operation.

The rescued victim, Mr. Itamar, is currently undergoing medical evaluation at SCC Company’s medical facility in Takum.
