Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Real Madrid confirms 5th Champions League spot for EPL

Published on April 09, 2025 at 05:35 AM

Arsenal's 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night, means the Premier League will have five teams in the competition next season.

The huge victory at the Emirates means England have secured one of the extra places for performance by clubs across the three European competitions.

Two leagues will get a European Performance Spot, EPS. This was introduced last season as part of a revamp to expand the competition to 36 teams.

England have been top of the EPS table for most of the season, and the extra place was all but confirmed following poor results for Italian clubs in the knockout playoff round and the round of 16.

That left the Premier League needing only one win or two draws, from the remaining fixtures.

Liverpool, Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Chelsea currently occupy the top four spots.

Newcastle United (53) is in fifth with a game in hand. Other clubs fighting for the top five include Manchester City (52), Aston Villa (51), Fulham (48) and Brighton & Hove Albion (47).
