Teachers in Bauchi State have called on the state government to fulfill its promises by addressing the lingering issues of unpaid leave grants, while also investing in school infrastructure and learning materials to create a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The appeal was made on Tuesday during separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), as schools resumed academic activities following the Ramadan break.
Sunusi Hamza, Headmaster of Sa’adu Zungur Model Primary School, expressed satisfaction with the student turnout but highlighted ongoing challenges. He said despite the enthusiasm of both teachers and students, key issues such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of teaching materials, and unresolved welfare entitlements—especially leave grants—continue to affect productivity.
“We are happy to see our students return in large numbers. However, we continue to face challenges in infrastructure, lack of teaching materials, and unresolved welfare issues like leave grants,”; Hamza said.
Echoing his sentiments, Malam Danladi Abi-Doka, Vice Principal of Government Junior Secondary School in Games Village, Bauchi, commended the resumption turnout and urged parents to ensure their children return to school promptly. He emphasized the importance of supporting the government’s efforts to improve education.
Dr. Mercy John, Principal of Sabil Sunlight School, also called on the government to prioritize the education sector for the benefit of future generations. She encouraged parents to act promptly by sending their children back to school after the holiday, adding that teachers, in turn, must be committed to delivering quality education.
“There is no reason to keep children at home once school resumes. Teachers should also give their best to equip students with foundational knowledge,”; she said.
The educators stressed that prompt action on their demands would go a long way in enhancing academic outcomes and ensuring that the state’s education system meets acceptable standards.
