Benue plunged into poverty by past administrations – Gov Alia

Published on April 11, 2025 at 08:19 AM

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has claimed that his predecessors, including former governors George Akume and Samuel Ortom, are responsible for plunging the state into severe poverty and underdevelopment.

Speaking during his maiden media chat with journalists, Governor Alia outlined the challenges his administration inherited.

He added that mismanagement, corruption, and poor governance had had detrimental effects on the state's development.

Governor Alia alleged that previous administrations left the state in financial turmoil, with ghost workers on the payroll and significant infrastructural decay.

“Previous administrations deliberately sought to leave Benue State in a state of perpetual poverty. This has been a source of great concern, as the widespread impact of such actions severely hindered the state’s progress,”; he said.

The governor expressed his commitment to tackling this issue head-on, promising to clean up the civil service and ensure that funds are allocated to genuine development projects.

“Benue has suffered for too long, and it’s time to make things right,”; Alia declared, vowing to restore the state’s financial health and deliver on his promises of progress and development.
