Benue: Police threaten to open fire as defiant youths occupy Otukpo road

Published on April 01, 2025 at 02:12 PM

Youths in Otukpo, Benue State, clashed with security agencies on Tuesday during a protest against the rising cases of killings and kidnappings in the area.

DAILY POST reports that angry residents took to the streets, chanting “We no go gree!”; as they blocked major roads, demanding urgent action from the government and security agencies to tackle the growing insecurity in the community.

The protests followed a series of killings that have plagued the area for some time.

However, during the protest, security personnel, including soldiers and police officers, were deployed to disperse the crowd.

Despite the presence of security forces, the defiant youths refused to back down.

At one point, the area commander of Otukpo, whose address went unheard by the protesters, drew his gun and threatened to open fire.

This provoked the youths, who dared him to shoot them.

The situation led to chaos in the community as the protesters insisted on continuing their demonstration.

As of the time of this report, the protest is still ongoing.
