Biafra: Nnamdi Kanu a prisoner of war, not felon – IPOB lawyer, Ejimakor

Published on April 10, 2025 at 09:27 AM

Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, has stated that the Biafra agitator is a prisoner of war and not a felon.

Ejimakor based his comment on former President Muhammadu Buhari's threat that he would teach Igbos in the language they would understand.

In 2021, the microblogging site Twitter, now X, deleted a tweet in which Buhari said: “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War.

“Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”;

Shortly after taking down the post, the Federal Government, following the microblogging platform’s action, suspended the platform, citing “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”;

In an interview with Arise TV, Buhari was asked about his comment, and the former president responded: “Yes, I said it, and we will do it.”;

“My statement about speaking the language is very simple. It is meant for all criminals in Nigeria.

“What it means for IPOB is that I will go after them through the military and police and rid them of their criminal tendencies. I have no regret whatsoever...”;

However, Ejimakor stated that Buhari's remark was a declaration of a second war against the Igbos.

Posting on X, Ejimakor said the threat paved the way for Kanu's subsequent rearrest and prosecution by the Nigerian government.

He wrote: “When Buhari threatened to teach Ndigbo the ‘language’ they understand, it was a declaration of a second war on Ndigbo. The crowning glory was the ‘capture’ of MAZI NNAMDI KANU, seen by Buhari as the ‘numero uno’ of Igbo leadership. Thus, #MNK is a prisoner of war, not a felon.”
