I tested all the boozy Easter Eggs – a £1.99 supermarket brand beats Hotel Chocolat’s at 17 times the price

Published on April 10, 2025 at 07:11 PM

THE Easter Bunny has grown up this year, with a selection of booze-themed chocolate eggs in stores that are definitely just for the adults.

Supermarket has launched an Espresso Martini choccy shell, while is also selling a tempting selection of tipple-filled treats.

Elsewhere there are plenty of other alcohol-themed options to choose from, including champagne and even brandy bites.

From eggs to get you sloshed, to more sobering choices, here Laura Stott cracks into a selection and offers her ratings based on taste and price.

Infusionist Coffee & Caramel Egg-Fusion Martini Duo, £9.99, 140g, Aldi

Box of coffee and caramel egg-fusion Martini duo chocolate Easter egg with espresso martini inside.
This boozy egg delivers with a cocktail surprise, but the chocolate shell falls short

THIS tipple-themed egg is pretty decent value for your .

For just under a tenner you get a good-sized Fairtrade Belgian milk choc shell and inside there’s no messing about with the booze, which comes in the form of a ready-to-drink 125ml canned cocktail.

The chocolate egg is nice enough, though not premium. It’s probably best for those with a sweeter tooth, with its caramel bits running through, plus there’s some additional coffee flavour.

But I did think the shell was thin and felt a bit mean for the money.

Where this delivers is on the cocktail front.

The Infusionist Espresso Martini hits all of the right notes.

Lovely.

Baileys Original Easter Egg, £12, 225g, Sainsbury's

Baileys chocolate Easter egg with truffles.
The Baileys Easter egg misses the mark, with weak booze flavour and average chocolate

NOT just for , you can now celebrate with an Irish cream-themed chocolate egg to mark Easter too.

If you are a fan of the famous glug, then this offering, which proclaims it has the flavours of the authentic Emerald Isle tipple running through it, makes a good gift.

The giant box contains a milk-choc dome and foil-wrapped truffles infused with actual Baileys. While this is a great idea, alas I found this treat underwhelming on the flavour.

The egg was on the small side and there’s no taste of booze in the shell.

It’s a fairly average milk chocolate which was not great quality.

You can detect some flavour of Baileys in the truffles, but it’s weak.

You’d be better off with a nip of the real thing. Disappointing.

Guinness Rugby Ball Easter Egg, £12, 196g, or Amazon

Dark chocolate rugby ball with Guinness-flavored dark chocolate truffles.
A rugby and Guinness fan’s dream Easter egg, but for others, it falls a bit flat on flavour

THIS branded shell will score tries for anyone who loves both rugby and a pint of the black stuff.

But if you can take or leave the sport, or the yeasty sip, eating this probably won’t result in a choc conversion.

The hollow shell has a dark hue to match the tipple and is made with 64 per cent cocoa solids for a more bitter flavour, but there’s no taste of actual .

It did have a sour aroma which I didn’t enjoy at all.

The truffles taste vaguely beery, with a light scent of pub floor, but the predominant flavours are cream and sugar rather than hops.

A good gift for the scrum-half or Guinness glugger in your life.

But for anyone else, it promises rather more than it delivers.

Tipsy Egg £34.95, 375g, Hotel Chocolat

Hotel Chocolat extra-thick Tipsy egg.
A luxurious Easter egg that offers top-tier chocolate and indulgent boozy truffles, but comes with a premium price tag

THERE’S no avoiding the fact that this Easter treat is rather costly.

But if it's luxurious, delicious and boozy that you want, then at least for the premium price tag you do get a truly special shell.

The egg is split into two types of chocolate – one half 70 per cent cocoa dark and the other 40 per cent cocoa milk chocolate, this is about as decadent as you’ll find.

Top-class and silky-smooth, this was the thickest, most generous choc egg I tried.

The gorgeous packaging also means it looks and smells top-tier.

Inside, you get a yummy array of tipple truffles and cocktail-themed chocs including rum, mojito and Martini.

Not cheap but you do get your money’s worth, so ideal for a bit of a splurge.

M&S Collection Marc De Champagne Truffles & Belgian Milk Chocolate Egg, £12, 242g, M&S

Box of Marc de Champagne truffles and Belgian milk chocolate Easter egg.
A classy champagne-flavoured treat that delivers great quality for the price, but the truffle count feels a little stingy

CLASSY and sophisticated fizz-themed option from , which is more competitively priced than you might think considering the first-rate quality.

While the packaging may seem small and underwhelming, don’t be misled because you actually get a lot of choc for your buck. The shell is substantial.

Made with delicious 40 per cent Belgian chocolate, the egg is thick and chunky and tastes creamy and smooth, and it melts in your mouth.

There’s a nice hum of real French champagne in the truffles as opposed to a direct booze hit, so while this won’t get you well oiled it does taste great.

A perfect posh prezzie, though only eight truffles seemed a bit mean.

Lindt Chocolate Eggs with Cognac (10 eggs), £9.35, chocolateemporium.com

Chocolate Emporium alcoholic Easter eggs in a bag.
Definitely a packet to hide from the kids, these smell and taste just like pouring yourself a snifter of booze from a bottle

THESE little bags of individually wrapped golden foil eggs by famous Swiss choc maker Lindt might not look like the most luxurious Easter offering, but they certainly pack a punch by providing plenty of alcohol.

Each thick, dark shell is generously filled with 14 per cent-liquid French brandy, and with so much neat cognac inside it’s like having a dark- chocolate digestif.

Definitely a packet to hide from the kids, these smell and taste just like pouring yourself a snifter of booze from a bottle so they really are for grown-ups only.

So if it’s a decadent, fuzzy-headed feeling you want, then yes – they do cost a bit more – but these are certainly a better option than the brand’s sober golden bunny. Hic!

Favorina Chocolate Eggs with Amaretto Liqueur (12 eggs), £1.99, 150g, Lidl in store

Bag of Favorina Amaretto Liqueur dark chocolate eggs.
Made with delicious, top tasting dark choccy with 55  per cent cocoa solids, each packet contains a whopping 42 per cent of the Italian liqueur Amaretto

THEY might be small but the booze in these is mighty. In fact, scoffing these sipping shells might leave you feeling more than just a little squiffy.

Don’t be fooled into thinking the brightly packaged mini eggs are a soft option as, despite only costing a couple of quid, they more than measure up – and tucking into a bag left me rather merry.

Made with delicious, top tasting dark choccy with 55  per cent cocoa solids, each packet contains a whopping 42 per cent of the Italian liqueur Amaretto.

Bite the top off the shell and you are left with a little chocolate encased “shot”; of nutty booze.

Absolutely delicious, these truly are a tipsy option and an unbelievable bargain.

For over-18s only!
