The Borno State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old school teacher, Bukar Modu, for allegedly assaulting a 10-year-old pupil, Bashir Babaji, in the Bulabulin Alajeri area of Maiduguri.

The incident, which occurred on March 16, 2025, came to public attention after a disturbing video surfaced online over the weekend, sparking outrage and widespread condemnation. In the viral footage, the suspect is seen repeatedly whipping the child while another unidentified boy poured water and sand on the victim. Despite the boy's desperate cries and visible pain, the teacher continued the beating, even placing his leg on the boy to restrain him.

Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday. According to him, the suspect allegedly punished the boy for absconding from class.

“The Borno State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of the arrest of one Bukar Modu, 30 years old, in connection with a viral video showing the physical abuse of a minor in the Bulabulin Alajeri area along Baga Road, Maiduguri,”; the statement read.

Daso explained that the Command launched an immediate investigation upon receiving the video and, with the support of vigilant residents and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, the suspect was traced and apprehended.

“The victim has since been taken to the hospital for medical examination and evaluation while the suspect remains in custody. The case is still under investigation and will be charged to court upon its conclusion,”; he added.

While appreciating the public’s concern over the incident, the police spokesperson urged citizens to avoid making inflammatory comments that could incite unrest or disrupt the investigation.

“The Borno State Police Command remains committed to upholding justice and ensuring the safety and welfare of all children in the state. We assure the public that this case will be pursued with the utmost diligence and transparency,”; Daso said.
