Frantic search for ‘person in the water’ at popular beach as coastguard helicopter and boats race to scene

A FRANTIC search is underway after a person was reported to be in the sea at a popular beach.

Boats and a coastguard helicopter raced to the seafront at Brighton, East Sussex, at around 4am following reports of a “possible person in the water”.

A spokeswoman for HM Coastguard said: “HM Coastguard is responding to reports of a possible person in the water in the Brighton Palace Pier area this morning, April 16.

“Alerted at around 4am, Shoreham and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Teams, lifeboats from Shoreham and Brighton RNLI and a coastguard search and rescue helicopter have been sent to assist.”
