Four budget tips for transforming your outdoor space ahead of summer

Published on April 10, 2025 at 11:02 PM

BETTER weather gives us the chance to entertain and make the most of outdoor spaces.

So you might want to spruce up decks and patios ready for guests.

We have four tips to give your garden space a makeover for the good weather

Here is how to give the area a budget makeover . . .

CLEAN UP: Scrubbing up tired-looking patio areas makes a big difference.

Start by brushing away moss, leaves and dirt and pull out any weeds growing between slabs.

A pressure washer makes light work of getting rid of grime.

Ask a friend or neighbour if there is one you can borrow.

Or put in the elbow grease and mix warm water with washing-up liquid and give the area a good clean with a hard bristle brush.

PATIO PATTERNS: Using paint and a stencil is a great way to transform patios on a budget.

You’ll first need to measure your slabs and choose a stencil design that matches.

B&Q sells different stencil designs for £9 each.

Or try Etsy for a wide range of styles and sizes.

Masonry paint that can be used on concrete slabs starts from £3 at Wickes.

Choose a day when the weather forecast is dry and use heavy-duty tape to keep your stencil in position.

FURNITURE: Outdoor furniture can look a little sad after winter.

Plug any rot on wooden items with wood filler or brush down flaking paint on metal chairs and tables.

A lick of paint can have furniture looking almost as good as new.

Fortress garden paint can be used on both wood and metal and is down from £15.99 to £8 at Screwfix.

SOFT FURNISHINGS: Cosy comforts can make an area more welcoming and stylish.

You can get outdoor cushions and rugs from Argos with prices starting at around £8.

Blankets are a great touch for chillier days and evenings.

Look for bright colours and patterns to add more interest to the area.

  • Prices correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.
