Built-in tracking software leads Manitoba RCMP to stolen vehicles, five arrested

Published on April 27, 2021 at 05:06 PM

Mounties say a stolen vehicle's tracking systems helped lead them to suspects and other stolen vehicles in southern Manitoba.

It all started around 2:00 a.m. on April 20, when RCMP responded to two reports of vehicles being stolen out of garages a short time apart in Rock Lake, in the RM of Argyle.

Police Dog Services searched the area but were unable to find any suspects.

However, later that day, officers say they were able to tap into one of the vehicle's built-in tracking systems, and found it travelling on Highway 2 in the RM of Victoria.

The vehicle sped from a traffic stop, and Mounties say they decided it was unsafe to give chase.

The following day, again using the vehicle's tracking software, officers say they found the vehicle parked in a field off Highway 5 in the RM of Glenboro – South Cypress.

Also at the scene, members allegedly found two stolen all-terrain vehicles, a firearm, and five suspects between the ages of 17 and 23.

Four were arrested without incident, but the RCMP says one “failed to comply with the officer's commands and Police Service Dog ‘Genie' was deployed to assist.”

Ultimately, all five were arrested, and are facing charges of possessing property obtained by crime and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

A 23-year-old man is also charged with resisting arrest.
