Canada: You’ve important job to stop Trump’ – NDP’s Singh tells Carney as he steps down

Leader of the left-wing New Democratic party, NDP, Jagmeet Singh has stepped down after losing his seat.

Singh announced his decision after conceding the loss of his seat in Burnaby Central but would stay on in the interim until a new leader was found.

He supporters and his family at the NDP election party and congratulated Liberal leader Mark Carney on his victory.

He said Carney had “an important job to do”; to protect Canada “from the threats of Donald Trump”;.

Singh’s loss of his seat in Burnaby Central was confirmed in early results which placed him in third place, trailing on 19% behind the Liberals’ Wade Chang and the Conservatives’ James Yan.

The NDP, which previously propped up Trudeau’s minority government, recorded its biggest-ever loss overall with opinion polls showing it has bled support to the Liberals.

It is currently projected to win just eight seats in the new parliament, meaning it will lose its official party status in the House of Commons for which 12 seats are needed.

In the last parliament it was the fourth largest party with 24 seats.
