Today in “Huh?”, Deadline reports that Carey Mulligan has signed on to play Adam Sandler’s wife in the upcoming Netflix movie Spaceman. Adam will star as an astronaut sent to the edge of the galaxy to collect a “mysterious ancient dust.” It’s based on a novel by Jaroslav Kalfar and will be directed by Johan Renck, known for his work on Chernobyl. Ohhhh I see. We’re talkin’ closer to Sandler in Uncut Gems than Sandler in Grown Ups 2. That explains why an OSCUH nominee like Carey is involved.
35-year-old Carey joins a long, distinguished list of actresses who have played 54-year-old Adam’s love interest: Idina Menzel, Jennifer Aniston, Julie Bowen, Drew Barrymore, Katie Holmes, Salma Hayek, Jessica Biel, Kate Beckinsale, and Winona Ryder. Damn, this guy pulls on the big screen! According to Deadline, Channing Tatum is also involved, but sadly he isn’t playing one of Adam’s love interests. He’s a producer:
The story, based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s novel, follows an astronaut (Sandler) sent to the edge of the galaxy to collect mysterious ancient dust. He soon finds his earthly life falling to pieces, and he turns to the only voice who can help him try to put it back together. It just so happens to belong to a creature from the beginning of time lurking in the shadows of his ship. Mulligan will play the wife of Sandler’s astronaut protagonist. Emmy-winning Chernobyl helmer Johan Renck is set to direct off a screenplay adapted by Colby Day.
The film will be produced by Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan and Michael Parets for Free Association. Parets will oversee for Free Association and Tim Headington, Lia Buman and Max Silva will oversee for Tango Entertainment. Ben Ormand, Renck and Barry Bernardi will executive produce.
Spaceman will be Carey’s fifth time collaborating with Netflix. Since Adam signed a deal with the streaming platform in 2014, he’s produced several films. Netflix doubled down on the deal in 2017 cuz so many people were watching Adam’s movies. Movies that include The Ridiculous 6, Murder Mystery, and Hubie Halloween.
Last weekend Carey hosted Saturday Night Live. Her real-life husband, Marcus Mumford from Mumford & Sons (not the problematic banjo player), dropped by for an opening monologue cameo. Carey hosted to promote her Oscar-nominated performance in Promising Young Woman. Everybody keeps telling me to watch that shit, but I dunnooo. Do I really wanna take a two-hour dive into rape culture? I already get enraged enough when I read similar new stories (errr, well, when I skim tweets) online. For my mental health, I think I’ll stick to crap like Murder Mystery!
