CCT chairman: We’ll investigate alleged assault with fairness, say police

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has assured the public that it will apply fairness and professionalism in its investigations on the allegation of assault involving the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar.

A viral video on social media had captured the moment Umar and a security guard were being separated from an altercation at Banex Shopping Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja.

Reacting to the incident, the Command through a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Yusuf Mariam, revealed that the police are carrying out discreet investigations.

The statement said, “Following the incident of alleged assault involving the CCT Chairman and a security guard that occurred at Bannex Plaza on Monday, March 29, 2021, the Command wishes to state categorically that discreet investigation is still ongoing.

“Hence, the Commissioner of Police CP Bala Ciroma wishes to reassure members of the public that the Command will be professional, fair and thorough in its investigation

“Furthermore, the Command urges residents to remain calm and allow the law take its cause.”

Meanwhile, The PUNCH has learnt that a trader, Peter Onyuike, has been arrested by the Department of State Services and handed over to the police.

This is as the police have failed to arrest the CCT chairman over the incident at the plaza.

A letter dated April 1, 2021, signed by ACP Magawata Mode, and addressed to Jul Reliable Security Guards which controls security at the shopping plaza also showed that another trader, Oyuho Augustine Samuel, is being investigated.

The letter read in part, “The office is investigating the above-mentioned case in which the need to obtain certain clarification from one Oyuho Augustine Samuel, who operates a shop within your business premises became pertinent.

“In view of the above, you are kindly requested to avail yourself to interview the undersigned through CSP Njayo Yahaya Bawuchi, sectional Head, Anti-Vice Section, No. 34 Koforidua Street, off Ouagadougou Street off Accra Street, off Michael Opara Street, Wuse Zone 2 on April 6, 2021, at 10am prompt.”;
