Cervical cancer: Ogun govt, UNICEF to commence HPV vaccination in 12 LGAs

Published on March 28, 2025 at 05:39 PM

In an effort to reduce cervical cancer cases in the country and increase the immunity of vulnerable girls in the state, the Ogun State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, has commenced an intensification programme on Human Papillomavirus, HPV, vaccination in 12 Local Government Areas of the state.

The Director of Disease Control and Immunisation at the Ogun State Primary Health Care Board, Thomas Solarin, disclosed this while briefing members of the State Social Mobilisation Committee in Abeokuta during a stakeholders' meeting on Friday.

He stated that the intensification programme was necessary following the routinisation of vaccination across health facilities in the state, which recorded less than 60 percent coverage of targeted girls aged 9–14 years, leaving over 40 percent unprotected against HPV and at risk of contracting the virus in the future.

Solarin urged mothers and caregivers in Abeokuta South, Ado-Odo/Ota, Ifo, Ijebu East, Ijebu North, Ikenne, Obafemi Owode, Odeda, Odogbolu, Sagamu, Ipokia, and Yewa North Local Government Areas to visit designated centres and health facilities with their girls aged 9–14 years to get vaccinated for free.

In their goodwill messages, UNICEF VSL Consultant Mrs Florence Moloku and the State Coordinator of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Victoria Adebiyi, appreciated the efforts of the SSMC members for their constant commitment to ensuring immunisation campaigns in their various domains.

Moloku, however, sought more support in creating awareness and mobilising for the programme, which will run for six weeks.
