AS the weather begins to warm up gardeners have been urged to prepare their outdoor space for plants.

Of course, there are many ways to get your garden plant-ready, but there's a little known trick you might not know can make a huge difference.

Gardeners can make use of lemon peel or use the whole fruit

According to gardening gurus, the secret is to make use of lemon peel to help your garden thrive.

“Some plants favour more acidic soils. Lemon peel can be used to alter the acidity of your soil, improving the health of your plants,” the pros at Mimea explained.

So, why does lemon peel work so well?

It all comes down to the fact lemons are rich in citric acid, and so adding their peel to soil will help make it more acidic.

“They're rich in all kinds of valuable nutrients, including essential vitamins and minerals that plants need to thrive,” the pros added.

You can also add lemon peel to your compost pile to integrate the nutrients further.

Simply spread the compost with the broken down matter over your beds to help give them a growth boost.

But the benefits of using lemon peel in your garden don't end there – they can also be used to keep creepy crawlies at bay.

Although the strong scent might be inviting to human noses, many unwanted pests are deterred by the fresh aroma.

So the peel has the benefit of making your garden smell fresh while also keeping away rodents and bugs.

And according to the gardening pros, the scent can attract some more wanted bugs, like butterflies, who reportedly love the citrus scent.

If you don't already have some lemons laying around at home, don't worry, you don't have to break the bank to try this hack.

You can pick up Lemons from Sainsbury's for as little as 30p – and they have rave reviews online, so you can enjoy them before discarding the peels in your garden.

One shopper rated Sainsbury's Lemons five stars and wrote: “Great lemons! Glad I purchased them. Would recommend.”

And a second agreed the price was too good to miss, they said:” We bought these as they were on a special offer and were pleasantly surprised how nice they were as we bought some in the past and they were so bitter.”

And uses for lemons in your garden don't end there, Fiona Jenkins, fromMyJobQuote.co.uk,previously told Flying Eze: “With minimal effort, you cankill weedswith lemon.Simply cut the fruit in half and then squeeze the juice over the weed.”;

She continued: “The citric acid in the lemon should kill the unwanted plant within a few days.

“This method is especially effective when there is strong sun shining on the weeds. The lemon juice can be used as it is, there is no need to dilute it.”;

He added that lemons can be a much better alternative to shop-bought products, many of which can contain harmful chemicals.

Plus, lemons can be purchased a lot more cheaply than weed-killer.

“Using a home-made alternative is a bit of a no-brainer,”; she said.
