WHERE TO RENT:Compare the key rental sites. By Rotation has a huge range of outfits that you can rent from third-party sellers.

Hurr works in a similar way, although you can also rent from the site’s own range. With Hirestreet, you rent from its collection, with brands including , M&S and .

Other sites include Girl Meets Dress, My Wardrobe and . The department store does men’s and women’s rental, with typical costs around £37 for hiring a £180 dress for four days.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS: Before you hire, think about the dress code and weather to avoid a last-minute costume change. Book up to a month ahead to get the pick of popular styles and to swerve urgent delivery fees.

Take accurate measurements to get the best fit and, where possible, use the brand’s online measurement guides. Consider rentals that allow refunds if an item doesn’t fit. In that case, you may have to return it the same day.

TIME IS MONEY: Some sites allow you to rent an item for a couple of days, others let you keep them for longer. Costs will vary accordingly. Longer rentals have a lower daily rate.

If you’re a regular renter or have a lot of events coming up, look for bundles or a subscription. Hirestreet allows you to rent five items a month for £55.

POST HASTE: If postage isn’t included, make sure you factor that into your costs.

And allow enough time to get it back to the seller, as late fees are steep. Use a tracked delivery service and keep proof of postage.
