BRITAIN'S favourite car brand has confirmed it will launch a cheaper and longer-range EV in just months.

The small electric car will harmonise value and space, while offering a range of up to 280 miles.

Thomas Schäfer, has confirmed the release of the ID 2.

It will be cheaper and smaller than the ID 3, but follows the same aim – to maximise interior space.

Some of its rivals could include the MG4 EV and the Peugeot e-208.

Design wise, the ID 2 reflects a Volkswagen Golf and a smaller version of the Volkswagen Polo – based on its hatchback style.

On the interior, it's simplistic.

It features a head-up display that projects important information onto the windscreen. Plus, a 10.9in digital driver’s display and a 12.9in infotainment screen.

The ID 2 will offer physical buttons to enable easier adjustments while driving.

Physical buttons also apply to the steering wheel, which gets thumbwheels on the left and right side, doubling up as buttons.

Users may also fold the rear seats in a 60:40 configuration order to carry longer items.

The ID 2 will also be available with two battery options.

At the lower end is a 28kWH unit that covers around 220 miles.

Meanwhile, a larger 56kWh battery will produce an official range of up to 280 miles.

This is similar to the MG4, which can cover 218 miles in SE form and 281 miles with Long Range.

Another distinct feature of the ID 2's is its front-wheel drive.

Two power options will be up for grabs including the 180bhp for the smaller battery and 223bhp for the larger one.

The 223bhp is believed to be capable of a sub 7.0sec 0-62mph time.

Volkswagen has also revealed the ID 2 requires a 10 to 80 per cent top-up for charging speed for the bigger battery.

This could take just 20 minutes at the car's 125kW maximum charging speed.

Meanwhile both the ID 3 and MG4 Long Range take about half an hour to go from 10 to 90 per cent.

Thomas Schäfer said in an interview with the Independent that after a “cover drive to the media at the end of the year”, the vehicle will be presented to the public “at the beginning of next year.”

When the ID 2 goes on sale in 2026, it will cost less than £21,000 for the entry-level 38kWh model.

Some of its high end features may include Matrix LED headlights, electrically adjustable massage seats and a panoramic glass sunroof.

For the 56kWh model, WhatCar? expects pricing will move up to around £25,000, which is in-line with the MG4 SE.
