China issues risk alert for citizens travelling to US amid trade rift

Published on April 09, 2025 at 05:42 PM

China's government has urged its citizens traveling to the United States to think twice before boarding a flight, citing security concerns.

The development expanded the country's response to the President Donald Trump administration’s steep tariff hikes.

China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism gave the security advice in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, “in light of worsening China–US trade relations and security concerns the United States”, Chinese citizens are urged to “carefully assess the risks of traveling to the US and “proceed with caution”.

DAILY POST reports that the move is coming after Beijing further retaliated against new tariffs imposed on it by Trump's administration.

Beijing had announced that it would impose an 84% levy on all imports from the United States, deepening a trade war between the world’s largest economies.

China’s Ministry of Education also issued a stern warning to the country’s students intending to study in some US states.
