Christian Media Forum condemns Plateau killings, demands justice for victims

Published on April 14, 2025 at 03:23 PM

The Christian Media Forum (CMF) has condemned the recent killings in Plateau State, calling on the government to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.

The Forum spoke in a statement jointly signed by its National President, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson and its National Secretary, Andrew Ibrahim Mshelia, on Monday.

“The recent attacks in Plateau State are not only disturbing but also a setback to peace efforts by various stakeholders who have worked hard to ensure peace in the state. We condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms and call for an immediate end to the violence.

“We acknowledge the efforts of security agencies in combating insecurity across the country.

“However, we urge them to do more in protecting lives and property, particularly in areas that have been ravaged by violence and attacks,” the group said.

The statement lamented that Plateau State has witnessed horrific internecine violence over the past two decades, with over 10,000 people dying in inter-communal bloodletting in the state.

“The recurrence of such attacks is a clear indication that more needs to be done to address the root causes of the violence,” the statement observed.

The Forum, therefore, urged all actors to sheathe their swords and embrace peace.

“No nation can achieve its God-given potential in an atmosphere of rancor and violence. We call on all Nigerians to work towards creating an atmosphere of peace and stability, which is essential for the country's progress and development,” it explained.

The Christian Media Forum noted that the attacks in Plateau State are a threat not only to the state, but also to the entire nation, saying that Nigeria cannot afford to have any part of the country destabilized, as this can have far-reaching consequences for the economy, security, and the citizens' well-being.

The statement called on the Plateau State governor to ensure that those perpetuating such criminal acts face the full force of the law, adding that it is in line with recommendations from human rights groups that have emphasized the need for accountability in addressing the root causes of communal violence.

“The government must take concrete steps to address the security challenges in Plateau State and other affected areas. This includes deploying adequate security personnel, providing necessary resources, and ensuring that those responsible for the attacks are brought to justice,” the statement opined.

The group also urged the security agencies to investigate the attacks thoroughly and identify the perpetrators, saying that the government must take all necessary measures to prevent future attacks and ensure that citizens feel safe and secure.

The Christian Media Forum said it stands in solidarity with the people of Plateau State and other affected areas and prayed for the victims of the attacks and their families and called on all Nigerians to join them in praying for peace and stability in the country.
