What Does My Tax Code Mean? A Simple Guide to Your HMRC Letter
MILLIONS have just three days left to claim cash if they use their own vehicle for work.
Those who use their own van, motorcycle, bike or car, are eligible to apply for tax relief through HMRC.
The deadline to claim is running out
You can claim relief on the approved mileage rate, which helps cover the cost of owning and running your vehicle.
The approved HMRC mileage rate for cars and vans is 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles you drove for business in the tax year.
After that you can claim 25p per mile.
For example, if you drove 20,000 miles for work, you could claim £4,500 for the first 10,000 you drove.
And then you could claim £2,500 for the remaining miles driven.
That would bring your total amount of money you claim for the year to £7,000.
If you drive a motorcycle the amount you can claim per 10,000 miles drops to 24p and those who use a bike can claim 20p per 10,000 miles.
Those keen to cash in should be aware the deadline to make a claim is fast approaching.
If you want to claim money back for the miles you have driven, you will need to do so by Saturday 5 April 2025.
To apply you will need to fill out a form on the Gov.uk website.

Before you claim you will need to have a record of the dates and mileage of your work journeys and add them up if you have used different vehicles.
You also need to be aware of what journeys you can and cannot claim for.
For example, you cannot claim for miles you have accumulated driving to and from work or for personal trips.
But you can claim for journeys you have made to other offices or work sites or business trips.
When you claim you will need to provide a reason for every journey and the postcode for the start and end for every trip.
You can do this by visiting, www.tax.service.gov.uk/claim-tax-relief-expenses/what-claiming-for.
DON'T MISS OUT ON TAX RELIEF CLAIMS
Time is also running out for those looking to claim tax relief on uniforms and remote working during the pandemic.
HMRCallows those who wear a uniform to work to claim back tax relief on the expenses of washing, repairing or even replacing the clothing.
That means workers such as pilots, police officers, ambulance workers and nurses can get some cash back.
You could even claim the money if you just wear a branded company T-shirt.
Thetaxrelief can be claimed on up to five years' worth of expenses, so it's not too late if you weren't aware.
For most workers, the standard allowance for uniform maintenance is £60.
This is a flat rate, which means you won't need to record and report the amount you're spending on uniform maintenance.
When you claim the uniform tax refund you will be getting back the amount of tax you would otherwise have paid on that £60.
That means if you're abasic-rate taxpayer(earning up to £50,270 a year), you'll get 20% back – or £12.
Meanwhile, anyone who worked from home during the pandemic can also claim relief to cover the extra cost of remote working, such as higher water or heatingbills.
What can I claim tax relief on?
THERE are certain things that you can claim tax on under HMRC rules. They include the following:
Expenses for working from home
Repairing or replacing small tools needed to do their job (for example, scissors or an electric drill)
Cleaning, repairing or replacing specialist clothing (for example, a branded uniform or safety boots)
Business mileage (not commuting)
Travel and overnight expenses
Professional fees and subscriptions
