WHETHER you're an avid tea drinker or a coffee addict, you likely have numerous stained mugs in your cupboard.

If putting them in the dishwasher hasn't helped, this DIY might make all the difference.

The solution to stubborn yellowed stains inside your favourite mugs can be found in your kitchen.

According to the Daily Express, this simple step will instantly transform your cup.

Whether you have years of tea splatters or coffee rings or you've just noticed a new off-white hue, this can fix it.

And there's no need to put in endless hours or scrubbing or risk damaging your mugs in the dishwasher.

According to one tea drinker at the Express, lemon juice is said to lift stubborn stains.

You can pick up a 200 mililitre bottle for just 45p from your local B&M.

Mixing the acidic liquid with baking soda is said to create a “fizzing solution” that tackles stains.

Since these ingredients instantly react by fizzing, a small amount goes a long way.

Leaving it to sit for as little as two minutes will show you a noticeable improvement.

This works by lifting a compound called tannins, found in tea and coffee, from your mug.

Tannins can stick to the porous surface and are difficult to remove if you regularly drink hot beverages from your mug.

Given the acidic nature of lemon juice, this ingredient can break down these set-in tannins.

Once combined with baking soda, the acidic juice loosened the stains, making them easier to wipe away.

Cleaning experts recommend allowing the DIY cleaning paste to sit for 15 to 30 minutes before rinsing

For stubborn stains, they suggested repeating the process until you see results.

You can also use a cut up lemon as a DIY scrubber to work the mixture in.

For an “extra boost of stain removal”, cleaning pros recommended leaving your freshly scrubbed mug in direct sunlight.

Finally, give it a thorough rinse to remove any leftover paste from the inside.
