A LEGENDARY retailer has announced the “regrettable” closure of its popular store as shoppers sob “our city is becoming a shell”.

The announced today it will shut one of its branches on 22 April after its landlord decided not to renew its lease.

HMV on Cornmaker street in Oxford is closing its doors for the final time as store staff were informed they are now at risk of redundancy.

The shop is housed in the Clarendon Centre, which isundergoing a major revamp that isn't due to finish until 2029.

After three decades trading in Oxford, HMV said it had hoped the plans would still enable it to continue trading at the centre.

In a statement, bosses said they had “no intention to stop serving our loyal customers in Oxford”.

They added: “We are actively looking for a new unit to restart trading as soon as possible and would encourage landlords and agents in Oxford to get in touch with new potential sites.”

Fans of the shop have been left devastated with one punter calling the city centre a “shell of its former self”.

Others joined in their disappointment with one commenter referring to the music vendor as one of his “favourite shops”, whilst another distraught fan said: “gutting”.
