An Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, on Tuesday, sentenced Monsuru Dada, 64, and Idown Dada, 41, to one year in prison each for collecting N1.1 million from Emowe Godfrey under false pretenses.

The convicts, whose addresses were not provided, had pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge of obtaining money under false pretenses, fraud, and stealing.

In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs. O. O. Fadairo, sentenced each of the convicts to one year in prison with an option of N50,000 fine.

Fadairo also directed them to restitute N1.1 million to the complainant.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. E. O. Adaraloye, told the court that the convicts committed the offenses between 2018 and June 24, 2024, at Ajayi Egan, Onibukun area, Ota.

Adaraloye said that the convicts collected N1.1 million from Emowe Godfrey under the pretext of selling him half a plot of land.

He stated that they, however, converted the money to their personal use instead of fulfilling the agreement with the complainant.

The prosecutor added that the offenses contravened Sections 419, 421, and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
