Published on April 03, 2025 at 04:40 PM

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has arrived in Lagos to evaluate the ongoing rehabilitation of the Independence Bridge and implement urgent measures to mitigate the severe traffic congestion resulting from its temporary closure.

Following reports of structural distress, Umahi had previously ordered repairs on the bridge, leading to its closure. However, the ensuing gridlock necessitated swift intervention to alleviate the disruption faced by commuters.

A statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media, Orji Uchenna Orji, confirmed the minister’s arrival, highlighting his commitment to addressing the situation.

“Less than 24 hours after the sad traffic experience on the Independence Bridge in Lagos, the Honourable Minister of Works, His Excellency, Sen. Engr. Nweze David Umahi CON, has arrived in Lagos to assess the situation with a view to providing immediate and permanent intervention,”; the statement read.

It also noted that on April 2, 2025, Umahi directed the immediate reopening of the bridge to ease the burden on Lagos residents.

Providing further details, the Controller of Works for Lagos State, Engr. Olukorode Kesha, stated that efforts were underway to ensure the bridge could safely accommodate traffic again.

“The minister has instructed us to reopen the bridge. However, some sections sustained damage during repairs, and we are currently implementing remedial measures,”; Kesha explained in a telephone interview.

He further assured, He added, “We are working overnight to fix the affected sections. The damage is extensive, but all hands are on deck to ensure the bridge is open to traffic as soon as possible.”;
