Details of Trump’s war plans in Yemen, swipe at ‘pathetic Europe’ revealed

Published on March 25, 2025 at 01:16 PM

Leaked messages have revealed the contempt some of US President Donald Trump's key cabinet members feel for their “free-loading” European allies.

The relationship between the US and Europe has become strained since Trump returned to the White, with the future of Ukraine a major bone of contention.

However, the extent of hostilities between the US and Europe could be seen in secret exchanges on the messaging app Signal, mistakenly sent to the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic magazine Jeffrey Goldberg.

Goldberg revealed that Trump's national security team added him to their group chat, where they shared highly classified information. He then published details of the conversation on Monday.

The chat included Vice President JD Vance, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard, national security advisor Mike Waltz and Trump's chief of staff Susie Wiles.

The conversation was initially about the military strikes against Houthi strongholds in Yemen.

In the chats, Vance expressed his concerns about the strikes, but ultimately agreed with US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth's plan. He added: “I just hate bailing Europe out again.”

Hegseth responded: “I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It's PATHETIC.”

Waltz is now facing the sack over the saga, as it is believed he “added the editor-in-chief to the group”.

According to The Atlantic editor-in-chief Goldberg, the messages featured information that could easily have been weaponised by enemies of the United States to harm their personnel and assets.
