Emir Bayero withdraws from Eid Durbar over security concerns

Published on March 27, 2025 at 09:15 AM

Amid ongoing tension over the Kano Emirate, the 15th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced the suspension of his planned Eid Durbar, citing security concerns and the need to maintain peace.

Bayero made the declaration in a late-night video address, reversing his earlier decision to organize a separate Durbar.
His announcement follows a formal notification he had sent to the Kano State Commissioner of Police regarding his initial plan—an action that came shortly after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf gave the green light for the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to begin preparations for the event.

In his address, Bayero emphasized that the decision was reached after extensive consultations with elders, religious leaders, and members of his Emirate Council. He stressed that while the Eid Durbar is a cherished tradition, it must not come at the expense of public order.

“The Durbar is a significant cultural event, but if its continuation poses any risk to stability, it is better to step back in the interest of peace,” he stated.

He urged Kano residents to accept the decision in good faith and called on the Muslim community to use the festive period to foster unity and strengthen social ties. Bayero also extended his felicitations to Muslims on the successful completion of Ramadan, offering prayers for divine blessings.

The development adds another layer to the lingering dispute over the Kano Emirate, where both Bayero and Sanusi II continue to lay claim to the throne.
