Europa League: Why Man Utd will not sell Onana – Scholes

Published on April 11, 2025 at 05:52 AM

Former Manchester United midfielder, Paul Scholes, has warned fans that Andre Onana might not be replaced this summer.

Scholes was speaking on TNT Sports, after two Onana errors saw the Red Devils draw 2-2 with Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday.

The Cameroonian flapped at Thiago Almada’s inswinging free-kick to gift the Ligue 1 side the lead.

Onana then spilled Alexander Lacazette's shot onto Rayan Cherki's path to score a late equalizer.

In-between his errors, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirzkee both scored to put Ruben Amorim's side ahead.

The tie is now delicately poised ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford next week.

When asked whether United should replace Onana in the summer, Scholes said: “Yeah, I think it’s something they need to think about.

“But they need to look at the budget as well. Can you get away with not spending that money on a goalkeeper?

“He hasn’t been quite good enough but it will come down to money and what Amorim has got to spend.”
