Everyone who’s been cast in The Sandman and who they’re playing

Exciting news has sprung forth once again for the Netflix original adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman comic book series.

The first cast members were announced at the top of the year letting fans in on the news that Tom Sturridge and Gwendolyn Christie would be a part of this story. Now, as we slip toward summer, 12 more castings have been announced with some fan-favorite actors coming into the fold.

The Sandman is centered on the people and places Morpheus, the Dream King, has affected. He intends to make amends for the mistakes he made both cosmic and human over the span of his vast existence.

It’s a story that will have quite a large ensemble cast. Here’s who will be a part of The Sandman as well as some information on the characters they will be playing.

The Sandman Cast

The first seven members of The Sandman cast were announced in January of 2021 as reported by Deadline.

  • Tom Sturridge as Dream, Lord of Dreaming.
  • Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Ruler of Hell.
  • Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, chief librarian and the guardian of Dream’s realm.
  • Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, a nightmare whose escape could give him the ability to “taste all that the world has in store.”
  • Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, a Charlatan, blackmailer, and magician.
  • Asim Chaudhry as Abel, the first victim and a resident/loyal subject of the Dream realm.
  • Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, the first predator and a resident/loyal subject of the Dream realm.

More cast members were announced by Gaiman on May 26 with added descriptions of the casting process for each character and the pronouns of each actor. The streamer tweeted the news to the excitement of fans eager for this adaptation.

The additional 12 cast members are as follows, via the Netflix press release:

Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, the sister of Dream. She’s “wiser, nicer, and much more sensible.” Death is the person who tells Dream the truth even when others won’t, she’s also who you’d want to meet once life has finished.

Mason Alexander Park as Desire, another of Dream’s siblings. They are exactly “what you want” at any time. They’re also trouble for Dream which makes their dynamic complicated.

Donna Preston as Despair, the polar opposite of her twin Desire. She is hope lost, a well of emptiness.

Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, an “18th-century occult adventuress” and the thrice great grandmother of John Constantine. By virtue of her occupation and personality, she’s tough as nails but carries the weight of all she’s seen.

Niamh Walsh as a younger Ethel Cripps, a betrayed young woman determined to survive her lot in the 1920s and ’30s.

Joely Richardson as present-day Ethel Cripps, who is a woman of many faces. She’s got hundreds of identities that are outpaced by her lies.

David Thewlis as John Dee, Ethel’s son. Both dangerous and mad, his search for Truth could “destroy the world,” but he hunts Truth anyway.

Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, a “young woman on a desperate search of her missing brother.” Her quest unearths more than she anticipated as she discovers a family she was unaware of and a connection to Dream.

Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall, Rose’s friend. Lyta is a widow who’s begun to see her husband Hector in her dreams. It’s a secret that she’s keeping from Rose along with the strange things happening that she can’t explain.

Sandra James Young as Unity Kinkaid, an heiress who spent a century asleep. A hundred years ahead of what should have been her life, waking now has put her in a peculiar position. She’s also “Rose’s mysterious benefactor.”

Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Rose’s protector. Watch out for his sword cane and his paradoxes.

Patton Oswalt as Matthew, a raven who is Dream’s trusted emissary.
