Three cash-saving tips to extend the life of your cherished football kits

Published on March 26, 2025 at 11:21 PM

SPORTS lovers can spend a fortune on official replica kits of the teams they support.

Yet, every year, thousands of tons of sportswear ends up in UK landfills.

Three cash-saving tips to extend the life of your cherished football kits

Campaign group Green Football has teamed up with footy shirts platform We Fix Kits to help fans extend the life of their cherished items.

Here’s how to keep your gear match fit . . .

GENTLE WASH: To keep sportswear in the best condition, handwash.

If using a washing machine, place the item in a laundry bag and choose a cool cycle. Don’t use fabric conditioner as it can lead to residue build-up.

Dry shirts upside down avoiding direct sunlight or radiators, which can damage fabrics.

When not in use, fold shirts rather than hanging them, to avoid stretching.

HOME TRANSFER: If your favourite player has left the club, you can remove the name on a shirt.

For a vinyl print, apply VLR solvent, available from Hobbycraft, to loosen the adhesive so you can peel it off.

Or for flock print, with a velvety feel on the letters, apply isopropyl alcohol (£5.49, Amazon) to the back and leave to rest for a few minutes.

Then use a scraper to lift the print, and wipe away any residue with a microfibre cloth.

REPAIR: You can reattach badges or sponsor labels that are coming loose by gently heating the area with an iron to reactivate the adhesive.

Put a protective cloth over the fabric then press firmly over the top of this with your iron. Or try an iron-on adhesive.

Tackle stains by identifying the cause and choosing a specialist remover. Washing-up liquid is a cheap solution for grease and oil marks. Dab on to the affected area and gently massage with a cloth.

If all else fails, consider upcycling your top into something new such as a piece of wall art or a cushion.
