MANCHESTER UNITED goalkeeper David de Gea put on a sensational display to help his side secure a 1-0 win over West Ham this afternoon.
The Red Devils broke the deadlock 38 minutes into the Premier League clash thanks to a sensational header from Marcus Rashford.
But, they were quickly put to the test when the Hammers went searching for an equaliser.
While the back four of Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire did well to keep David Moyes’ side at bay for most of the second half, De Gea made some show-stopping saves in the final minutes to retain the clean sheet.
And many fans have been left baffled as to why he will not be on the plane to Qatar.
One person tweeted: “David de Gea, take a well deserved bow.”
Another added: “De Gea took not being included in Spain 55-man squad personal.”
A third said: “How on earth is De Gea not Spain’s number one keeper, arguably best in the league.”
While a fourth added: “David De Gea, take a bow. De Gea just proved Luis Enrique wrong on why he needs to be the number one goalkeeper for Spain in the World Cup this year.”
Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel also took the time to applaud the Spaniard.
He tweeted: “David De Gea. Unbelievable.”
De Gea has now kept a clean sheet in each of his last five games at Old Trafford across all competitions.
After the game, the goalkeeper told Sky Sports: “It’s a great win for us. If we want to achieve and be in the top places we have to win games like this today.
“Of the two saves, probably the header from Zouma was the best because it was almost certainly going in but I am happy for all of them. Happy to make the saves and it’s a massive win.
“We are pressing well and recovering the ball well high up the pitch. We conceded some chances at the end but West Ham are a great team. I’m really happy to be honest.
“We had a difficult start to the season, Man United is a massive club and we are getting better. We can keep more clean sheets, play well and keep going until the end.
“I don’t like to think too far into the future, we will just take it day by day. Big game on Thursday and we want to finish top of the group. We will go for another game, more energy and keep going again.”
Man Utd now sit fifth in the Premier League table with 23 points from 12 games.
