The Nineteen Seventeen Northern Consensus Movement, a coalition of 597 associations across the 19 northern states has successfully facilitated the release of four hunters from Kano who were re-arrested in Edo State for possessing locally-made firearms.
The hunters were detained weeks after the tragic killing of 16 northern hunters in Uromi Local Government Area of Edo State, an incident that stirred widespread outrage and calls for justice.
Confirming the development in a brief statement to a local News paper, Comrade Kabiru Sani Garko, Secretary of the Northern Consensus Movement, said the released individuals hailed from Doguwa and Kibiya Local Government Areas of Kano State.
According to him, “The Nineteen Seventeen Northern Consensus Movement, an amalgamation of 597 northern associations and groups from across 19 northern states including representatives in 17 southern states has once again played a critical role.
Today, April 15, 2025, we secured the release on bail of four hunters from the North who were recently arrested in Edo State with locally-made firearms.”
Garko appealed to the Kano State Government to take proactive steps to discourage hunters from travelling to southern Nigeria in search of game, given the growing security risks.
He also extended appreciation to the Edo State Police Command for their professionalism, specifically commending Inspector Umaru, the State PPRO, the head of the anti-robbery unit, the DC CID, and the Commissioner of Police for their cooperation and for dropping all charges against the hunters.
