A tragic mining site collapse has claimed the lives of four miners in the Farin-Doki area of Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State.

It was gathered the incident occurred on Sunday and involved the same mining company, African Minerals and Logistics Limited, responsible for a similar tragedy last year that killed eight miners.

It would be recalled that in April 2024, over 50 miners were trapped in the mining pit of African Minerals and Logistics Limited. Eight of the miners died as they could not be rescued.

In the latest incident, miners who sustained injuries in the pit collapse are said to be receiving treatment at a government hospital in Minna.

According to reports, the mining site which was previously closed down by the government following the earlier incident, allegedly resumed operations without proper authorization.

A source close to the Galkogo community expressed frustration, stating that despite the government's ban on illegal mining, activities have continued unabated

“This is the third time now that the mining pit is collapsing and killing our boys due to the current economic difficulties being experienced by people of the community,” the source lamented.

Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command through the Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said on 13/4/2025 at about 8:00 am, information was received that there was a collapse/slide at a mining site in the Farin-Doki area of Shiroro LGA.

He explained that during the rock slides, two persons were trapped who were later identified as Buhari Kano and Mallam Tasiu, both of Kano State.

“Police operatives attached to Erena Division and community members mobilised to the scene for a rescue and unfortunately, suspected lifeless bodies of the two persons were recovered. The bodies were taken to a hospital in Zumba.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were suspected to have gone to the site at night for illegal mining activities, before the rock slides occurred. The incident is under further investigation,” the police spokesman disclosed.
