Hit Show ran to a surprise win to deny Frankie Dettori on Mixto

The Italian jockey was riding on Mixto for the event in the .

The feature event had a total prize fund of £9.29million, with £5m of that going to the winning horse.

All eyes had been on favourite Forever Young, but the challenge never materialised as 33/1 Mixto looked set to land the top prize during the race after racing into the lead.

It meant Dettori, 54, was set to take home a cool £500,000.

However, 80/1 shot Hit Show turned up a huge shock for the bookies.

Riding with Florent Geroux, Hit Show came through from second last on the final bend to overtake Mixto metres before the line, with Forever Young coming in third.

The prize for second place was just shy of £1.9m, meaning Dettori still takes home a tidy £190,000 from the race.

That is paired with a £190,000 pot he won in the Godolphin Mile riding on Raging Torrent earlier in the day.

However, after filing for bankruptcy last month, he no doubt would have appreciated the larger prize pot.

Speaking on his win, French jockey Geroux, who was second on Gun Runner behind Arrogate in 2017, said: “It’s amazing, I had such a great trip the whole way,

“I had to pass a lot of horses, but I could see my target and he was not travelling as well as my horse.

“I had a few anxious moments with Forever Young on the turn, but he went there with an impressive charge.

“I know my horse well and for some reason he runs strongly for me all the time.

“I’ll be honest and say I thought we were running for a place and they gave me more, so I took it. It’s amazing.

“He is a great horse but today was the cherry on the cake.”;
