Fuel tanker explodes in Niger

Published on March 24, 2025 at 01:41 PM

There was pandemonium in Kontagora, Niger State, on Sunday when a petrol tanker exploded, causing panic among residents and motorists in the area.

The incident, which occurred near AA Rano, opposite Kontagora General Hospital, recorded no casualties.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to newsmen said that the tanker suddenly burst into flames, sending thick black smoke billowing into the sky.

It was gathered that firefighters and emergency responders were at the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures.

Despite the intensity of the fire, only the tanker was reportedly destroyed.

The Director of Information at the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Hussaini Ibrahim, who confirmed the incident to journalists, assured the public that the situation was under control.

Ibrahim further stated that no lives were lost and no property was damaged apart from the burnt tanker.

At the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to determine the cause of the explosion, but preliminary reports suggest a possible mechanical fault or leakage may have triggered the incident.
