Fulani leaders convene peace summit in Bauchi to prevent herders, farmers clash

In a proactive move to prevent seasonal clashes between herders and farmers, Fulani leaders under the umbrella of Miyetti Allah Dangol Fulako have convened a peace summit in Miri District, Bauchi State, ahead of the rainy season.

The summit, which drew together traditional leaders, community heads, and representatives of the Fulani pastoral community, aimed to foster dialogue and mutual understanding in a bid to curb recurring disputes over land and cattle routes.

A special prayer session was held during the gathering to invoke peace and unity among the diverse groups in the area. Fulani leaders at the summit reiterated their commitment to peaceful coexistence, urging their members to embrace dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation.

“We are here to ensure that this farming season passes without conflict. Our people must understand that peace is the foundation of progress,”; one of the Fulani leaders stated.

The District Head of Miri, Abubakar Usman, praised the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention. He appealed to farmers to respect designated cattle routes, warning that encroaching on these paths by planting crops could provoke unnecessary conflict.

“I have directed all village and hamlet heads under my jurisdiction to remain neutral and ensure fairness when resolving any issues that may arise. Lasting peace can only be achieved when leaders act impartially,”; Usman said.

Several participants expressed hope that the summit would ease tensions and promote better relations between herders and farmers, especially during the critical farming period.
