Fulani youths call for end to farmer-herder clashes

Published on April 29, 2025 at 01:57 PM

A Fulani youth organisation, Concerned Fulani Youths, has called for sustained dialogue and cooperation among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups to foster peace and mutual understanding across the country.

The call came at the conclusion of the group’s maiden Fulbe Unity Concert, held in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

A communique issued after the event, and signed by Ambassador Mohammed Tasiu Suleiman, stated the need to address recurring tensions — particularly the long-standing farmer-herder conflicts that have plagued several parts of Nigeria.

“The concert was aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence, unity, and the rich cultural heritage of the Fulani ethnic group,”; the communique stated.

The group urged national stakeholders to support initiatives focusing on education, skills development and economic empowerment for Fulani youth.

Among the key resolutions pointed out were:

Establishing platforms for regular inter-ethnic dialogue to foster understanding and reduce tensions.

Creating strategies to tackle issues affecting Fulani communities, including conflicts, crime, and substance abuse.

Promoting and preserving Fulbe cultural traditions through events, education, and documentation.

Forming a committee to monitor the implementation of these resolutions.

Partnering with government agencies, civil society organisations, and traditional leaders for youth development and cultural preservation.

Organizing similar events periodically to build on the momentum of the concert.

Described by participants as a “resounding success,”; the Fulbe Unity Concert featured traditional music, dance and art that showcased the Fulani people’s heritage and their role in Nigeria’s cultural landscape.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr. Awwal Abdullahi, Comrade Sani Garko, Alhaji Bala Mohammed Dabo, and Engineer Ibrahim Adamu, who represented the President of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Dr. Abdullahi Bello Bodejo (Lamido Fulbe).

In their closing remarks, the group expressed appreciation to Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi A. Sule and other supporters of the event, pledging continued efforts to build a more inclusive and peaceful Nigeria.
