‘A Dier mistake’ – Gary Lineker makes Kieron Dyer gaff live on BBC ahead of England vs Senegal but laughs off error

GARY LINEKER made a silly gaff when introducing a segment on BBC as he got his Diers and Dyers muddled.

During the coverage of France’s round of 16 game against Poland in the World Cup, the BBC showed a short film of Eric Dier and Jordan Pickford reacting to previous England games.

It was centered around the round of 16 games and looking at how they contributed to England’s success against Colombia at that stage of the tournament in 2018.

However, Lineker introduced the show by saying: “Ahead of England vs Senegal, Kelly Summers has been speaking to two heroes of a famous last sixteen match in 2018 Kieron Dyer and Jordan Pickford.”;

He had clearly made the simple mistake based on the player’s similar surnames.

While Eric Dier still plays for England, Kieron Dyer has retired from football and has not played internationally since 2007.

After the feature, Lineker apologised for the gaff and played it off cooly with a clever play on words.

He said: “Still gets me that game and that is probably why I called him Kieron and nor Eric.

“A Dier mistake,”; which earned a couple of chuckles from his co-pundits.

Since retiring from player Dyer has taken up coaching and was working at Ipswich Town.

The former winger resigned from the role in March 2021 despite him regularly being involved in the first team and in the dugout.

HOW TO GET FREE BETS ON THE WORLD CUP

Tottenham’s Dier is in the World Cup squad but he jas only made on appearance at the tournament.

Manager Gareth Southgate has usually instead opted for defenders Harry Maguire and John Stones ahead of him.
