Gene Hackman & wife Betsy’s $11m real estate portfolio revealed – Hawaii & New Mexico properties all have bizarre detail

Published on March 24, 2025 at 07:18 PM

GENE Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa's expansive $11 million real estate portfolio includes properties in New Mexico and Hawaii, and they all have one strange detail in common.

The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal that when Gene and Betsy tragically died last month, they owned three pricey properties.

The Santa Fe compound where they died is estimated to be worth $3.8million, meanwhile, two additional properties have now been uncovered in their portfolio.

The couple also owned a massive commercial real estate property in Honolulu.

The mixed-use property seems to span two separate buildings and includes businesses and residential apartments.

According to the tax assessor's office, the property is worth over $6 million.

The pair also owned a smaller plot of land in New Mexico, and is worth approximately $1million according to that local tax assessor.

Despite Gene making the lion's share of the earnings in the marriage and being worth an estimated $80million, all of the couple's properties are listed solely in Betsy's name.

Gene has 3 children, who are his living heirs, meanwhile, Betsy has no children and has determined in her will all of her estate is to go to charity.

Although Christopher, 65, Elizabeth, 62, and Leslie, 58, are named as Gene's children in the will, the actor designated Betsy as the sole beneficiary of his trust and estate.

However, since Betsy's death pre-dated Gene's, his children may be able to attempt to claim the estate as his living heirs.

Gene had his three children with wife Faye Maltese, whom he married in 1956.

The double Oscar winner owned an elegant desert retreat valued at $3.8 million, where he embraced a life of seclusion.

Following his retirement from acting, Hackman was seldom seen in public.

He and his wife Betsy reportedly lived in a stunning 8,761-square-foot residence, nestled amidst trees and lush greenery.

The exact number of rooms in the breathtaking property remains uncertain, but some reports suggest it may have featured four bedrooms and four bathrooms, offering the actor a touch of luxury in the serene New Mexico desert.

In a 1990 interview with Architectural Digest, Hackman spoke about his deep affection for the secluded home.

He had purchased a house perched on a hilltop with sweeping 360-degree views, which he completely transformed.

The actor revealed that he was drawn to the New Mexico home after falling in love with the area while filming there.

QUESTIONS IN DEATHS TIMELINES

Meanwhile, the investigations into their deaths seem to leave more questions than answers.

court order from the actor's estate has prohibited the Sheriff's Office and the Office of the Medical Investigator from disclosing any details.

As The U.S. Sun previously reported, blocking autopsy reports from being made public in New Mexico is highly unusual, according to sources close to the Hackmans' deaths investigation.

Police have also acknowledged that Betsy was alive for a full 24 hours after they initially believed she had died.

Mobile phone records reveal that Betsy made several calls to a medical centre in Santa Fe on 12 February, a day after she was thought to have passed away on 11 February.

Gene Hackman's family's full statement

Gene Hackman's family has spoken out on the actor's death after he was found dead with his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in their Santa Fe home.

Hackman's daughters, Elizabeth and Leslie, and his granddaughter, Annie, released the statement.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy,” Elizabeth, Leslie, and Annie Hackman said.

“He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa.

“We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”

Dr Child, who had spoken with Betsy a few weeks before her death, earlier stated that she had scheduled an appointment for 12 February, the day following her presumed death.

They said: “She made an appointment for herself for February 12. It was for something unrelated to anything respiratory.”

He also mentioned that Betsy had cancelled the appointment a few days earlier, referencing her husband's deteriorating health.

Hackman’s death was attributed to hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer's being a significant contributing factor.

Neither of the Hackmans' bodies was found until February 26, when a neighbor’s caretaker called 911 after finding them unresponsive.

But Betsy was found dead alongside Hackman in their New Mexico home, with authorities saying she passed away a week before him.

Gene was 95 years old and Betsy was 65.
