Gombe records three deaths from Meningitis amid rising cases

Gombe State has recorded three deaths from cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) as of March 27, 2025, according to the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre in Gombe, Dr. Dahiru disclosed that 70 suspected cases have been reported across nine local government areas (LGAs).

Out of the 63 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples collected, 31 tested positive for CSM, representing a collection rate of 83%.

“So far, we have recorded only three deaths,”; Dr. Dahiru confirmed, as the state health authorities intensify efforts to contain the outbreak.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has deployed Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to the most affected states—Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina—to curb the ongoing outbreak.

In a statement signed by Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Datti, the NCDC reported a nationwide surge in cases. As of March 26, 2025, Nigeria has recorded 807 suspected cases and 74 deaths across 22 states, with a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 9.2%. Kebbi, Katsina, and Sokoto states remain the hardest hit, with the highest number of cases, deaths, and CFRs, necessitating urgent intervention.

The NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, stated that the deployed teams would remain in the affected states for an initial 14-day period, with a possibility of extension based on the outbreak's severity.

“The safety of our personnel is paramount, and all team members must strictly adhere to infection prevention and control (IPC) measures throughout the response,”; Dr. Idris emphasized.

The multidisciplinary teams, comprising specialists in case management and lumbar puncture techniques, are collaborating with state health authorities to contain the outbreak and prevent further transmission.

Health authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, adhere to safety guidelines, and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms develop.
